Background
At present, solar awnings available in the market are conventional PV modules (Glass-Tedlar and Glass-Glass structure) which are square shaped, unbendable, relatively heavy and their physical appearance is not attractive. ENTEC research team has developed a new solar module structure which looks more appealing and is lightweight, robust and easy to install, representing an innovative building integrated PV (BIPV) product in the country.
Goal
The research team aims to develop solar modules that are lightweight (50% lighter than conventional solar module (Glass-Tedlar structure)), bendable, easier and cheaper to install (i.e. it can be drilled directly onto the wall or the roof structure without the need for special equipment).
Research Prototype
The research team has developed a new module structure and lamination techniques for a polyethylene terephthalate (PET) – acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) PV module which is lightweight, bendable, durable, and easy to install.
Intellectual Properties
- Patent on “Acrylonitrile -butadiene-styrene solar panels” No. 1901006126 [27 September 2019]
- Petty Patent on “Coating techniques for the solar cell panels using silica” No. 2003002411 [25 September 2020]
Status of research prototype
IP has been licensed and the research product is currently in the process of IEC standard testing.
