IRPC Public Company Limited (IRPC) is a major producer in petroleum and petrochemical industry. The company is the first fully integrated petrochemical complex in Southeast Asia with supporting infrastructure such as deep seaport,\u00a0<\/span><\/span>tank farm and power plant. Among various products of IRPC, Acetylene black is one of IRPC products in the\u00a0<\/span>petrochemical production process and IRPC aims to utilize it as a raw material for the production of lithium-ion battery\u00a0<\/span>and supercapacitor material. IRPC has thus collaborated with Energy Storage Technology Research Team (ESTT)\u00a0<\/span>at National Energy Technology Center (ENTEC) and jointly conducted the research and development for the next innovation.<\/span><\/p>

\u201cIRPC has a diversity of products and Acetylene black is one of the products with technological value.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>This compound is a specialty product which our company continues to develop and seeks business partnership for\u201d,\u00a0<\/span>said Mr. Chawalit Tippawanich, President and Chief Executive Officer of IRPC.<\/span><\/p>

\u201cSince battery is one of the global trends, we endeavor to conduct the research and development on Acetylene black by customizing the properties of the compound to meet the market demands. A value chain creation in electric vehicles that requires batteries with high energy density is likely to attract investment. This will help Thailand not be left behind in the value chain of internal combustion vehicles, which is one of the key goals of IRPC.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>

For the origin of IRPC collaboration with ENTEC, Mr. Tippawanich said, \u201cIt is well known that ENTEC has competent personnel ready to support the government\u2019s policy in public-private partnership to help translating the research findings into products or services required by business sector. In addition, ENTEC offers a wide range of highly sophisticated analytical and synthesis tools. We, therefore, have a strong confidence in the potential of ENTEC.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>

Mr. Tippawanich also praised ENTEC and said, \u201cENTEC\u2019s research team has an expertise. The collaboration with ENTEC has always evolved and produced significant business advances. As such, IRPC can now enter the lithium-ion battery market. This demonstrates that the Acetylene black has the right properties. IRPC named this product Pim-AL and Pim-L in<\/span><\/span><\/p>

To achieve the target with other 60%, Mr. Tippawanich\u00a0<\/span><\/span>elaborated, \u201cUsing acetylene black as a conductive material\u00a0<\/span>would require relatively advanced techniques. We are interested\u00a0<\/span>in developing product properties by focusing on the restructuring\u00a0<\/span>process. This is considered as a leap from research to\u00a0<\/span>manufacturing. Currently, IRPC\u2019s research team has been\u00a0<\/span>working on it so that we can use various technologies to\u00a0<\/span>improve the production. This will be a huge breakthrough.\u201d<\/span><\/p>

Mr. Tippawanich gave the team a strategic direction\u00a0<\/span><\/span>in terms of expanding and creating a knowledge for\u00a0<\/span>technology transfer. \u201cWe want our products to meet the\u00a0<\/span>specifications or technical requirements in the market and\u00a0<\/span>enter the market as quickly as possible with a qualitative\u00a0<\/span>reliability. The team will periodically report on the above key\u00a0<\/span>concerns to monitor the progress.\u201d<\/span><\/p>

Mr. Phayom Boonyoung, Executive Vice President of\u00a0<\/span><\/span>IRPC mentioned the part of technology transfer from ENTEC,\u00a0<\/span>\u201cIn terms of the time frame for research, when there is a progress,\u00a0<\/span>Dr. Limthongkul will share the research find-outs in the meeting.\u00a0<\/span>For the technology transfer, our staff were trained at NSTDA,\u00a0<\/span>which has been very cooperative. All these processes make our\u00a0<\/span>research run smoothly. Once the research results are obtained,\u00a0<\/span>we are confident that IRPC can enter the lithium-ion battery\u00a0<\/span>business. This research is a starting point for IRPC to penetrate\u00a0<\/span>this market.\u201d<\/span><\/p>

Mr. Boonyoung also added, \u201cIn the past, the research\u00a0<\/span><\/span>on lithium-ion batteries in Thailand was quite limited.\u00a0<\/span>Dr. Limthongkul became the momentum in making the progress.\u00a0<\/span>If there\u2019s any hindrance, she\u2019ll seek the solution immediately.\u00a0<\/span>In addition, the facilities at NSTDA are the most complete in\u00a0<\/span>the country. Commenting on the collaboration, Mr.Arkhom Paso,\u00a0<\/span><\/span>an IRPC\u2019s researcher said, \u201cENTEC research team is generous in\u00a0<\/span>sharing the insights which are unknown to us and pointing out\u00a0<\/span>important issues in this business applicable to our knowledge\u00a0<\/span>extension\u201d<\/span><\/p>

Mr.Natouch Joycharoen, Sale Manager of IRPC, added\u00a0<\/span><\/span>information in the marketing aspect, \u201cOur products come in two\u00a0<\/span>grades, Pim-AL for lead-acid batteries and Pim-L for lithium-ion\u00a0<\/span>batteries. These two items earn a progressive success over the\u00a0<\/span>time. IRPC is now selling Pim-AL and receives continued orders\u00a0<\/span>from our customers.\u201d<\/span><\/p>

For Pim-L, the first order has been placed and the\u00a0<\/span><\/span>reorder has come in the pipeline. We began to see the\u00a0<\/span>direction that the product will be successful in the future.\u00a0<\/span>Since the lithium-ion battery market is a special market that\u00a0<\/span>the buyers are well versed in technology, we cannot just\u00a0<\/span>show the product or technical specifications. Our sell\u00a0<\/span>representatives also need to have strong technical knowledge\u00a0<\/span>and Dr. Limthongkul works out to educate our sales team.\u201d<\/span><\/p>

Mr. Tippawanich concluded \u201cIn bringing the\u00a0<\/span><\/span>research and development to the commercial production,\u00a0<\/span>we need an intellectual property knowledge to make\u00a0<\/span>a difference and that intellectual property can be\u00a0<\/span>patented. IRPC welcomes more research and development\u00a0<\/span>collaborations with institutes, public or private sectors to\u00a0<\/span>overcome the great challenges together.
