The National Energy Technology Center (ENTEC), under the National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA), marked a major milestone in the development of EnPAT, a biodegradable transformer insulating oil made from palm oil. The project’s closing conference marked the successful completion of its integrated field-testing program across Phases 1–3, paving the way for wider commercial adoption of the technology. Dr. Somboon Sahasithiwat, Executive Director of ENTEC, presided over the opening ceremony.
This milestone reflects the strong and seamless collaboration between a broad network of public and private sector partners, including P.S.P. Specialties PCL, Global Green Chemicals PCL, Charoenchai Transformer Co., Ltd., the Metropolitan Electricity Authority (MEA), the Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA), the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT), the Thai Industrial Standards Institute (TISI), and the Program Management Unit for Competitiveness Enhancement (PMU-C).
EnPAT, a safe transformer insulating oil derived from Thai palm oil developed by Thai researchers, has undergone testing in the electricity distribution systems operated by PEA and MEA to build confidence in its performance. Transformers filled with EnPAT are currently being piloted in ten locations across the country: Bangkok, Pathum Thani, Chonburi, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Nakhon Ratchasima, Ubon Ratchathani, Udon Thani, Ratchaburi, and Chumphon.
Beyond raising the safety bar for the national power grid, with its higher flash point and environmentally friendly properties, EnPAT offers potential safety and environmental benefits for Thailand’s electricity infrastructure. The project also contributes to the country’s Bio-Circular-Green (BCG) Economy and carbon neutrality goals by creating technological value from domestically produced agricultural resources while helping reduce reliance on imported fossil-based mineral insulating oil. It stands as yet another point of pride for Thai research, poised to grow and drive the nation’s green infrastructure toward a more sustainable future.
